Good Eats

Everything we serve at camp is based on healthy, well-balanced choices that kids enjoy. Everything is made from scratch including all of our breads and desserts! Meals focus on fresh, whole foods, lean proteins, and locally sourced dairy, and an abundance of fruits and vegetables (many of which we grow in our own greenhouse and garden). We offer dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and other options for dietary restrictions.

Joyful Dining - Sharing Meals Together

Our entire camp eats together at every meal. Girls sit with their cabin groups and pass dishes around the table “family-style”.

Almost every main dish is served “a la carte” so that girls can take what they prefer (no more casseroles these days). So if were are serving spaghetti, the pasta is served in one bowl, marinara sauce in another, and meatballs (vegan and meat) in a third.

If girls do not like what is served for the main course, they are welcome to take a trip to our extensive salad bar. It is loaded with dark greens, fresh veggies of all kinds, legumes, proteins (chicken breast, hard boiled eggs, tuna), and low fat dressings. If they have gluten sensitivities this is a good option as well.

On special occasions, meals are served outside the dining hall on the “boardwalk” overlooking the lake. For these fun events, a special buffet is prepared and campers are served their choice in line.

Contrary to what most would think, “camp food” is not so bad at Birchwood! In fact, girls rave about it when they go home and lots of parents request recipes throughout the year. Our culinary director has been at Camp for four years now, after working high-end events in the Twin Cities area for over ten years.
