Keeping our campers safe and sound is of paramount importance.

As a proud member of the American Camp Association, Camp Birchwood adheres to a stringent set of standards to promote safety in every area of camp.

Each and every Birchwood counselor is trained to abide by the ACA standards set forth for each activity. These standards include everything from wearing helmets while horseback riding to making sure that lifejackets are worn properly during water activities. Counselors hold current certifications in First Aid and CPR, with additional certifications in Wilderness First Aid for those who take trips out of camp. Birchwood lifeguards are trained prior to camp to adhere to current Red Cross guidelines.

To promote emotional safety, counselors are trained extensively to handle discipline by using techniques promoted by Love & Logic theories. Staff members also learn how to promote healthy group dynamics at every age level.

Each week, a registered nurse or medical doctor is in camp to respond to everything from common ailments to unexpected emergencies. A health care manager is in place all summer to help manage medication dispensing and the overall wellness of campers. Emergency ambulance response time is within 10 minutes, and a regional hospital is located 30 minutes away in nearby Bemidji.

For additional information on our health and safety standards, we welcome you to call us at the camp office. We may or may not be the appropriate choice for a camper with advanced health concerns, medical needs, severe food allergies, or psychological diagnosis.
