At Camp Birchwood, campers decide what and how much to eat. Our international kitchen staff — many of whom return year after year — prepare home-cooked meals, hand-baked breads and fresh desserts from scratch daily.

Meals are based upon healthy, well-balanced choices that kids enjoy, including lean proteins, an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, and a well-stocked, ten-foot-long salad bar. Snacks, served in the morning and before bed, are simple and nutritious.

Campers sit with their cabin counselors at a large table in the dining hall. Meals are served family-style so that cabins can join together and share the successes of the day while passing hearty dishes around the table. Almost every main dish is served “a la carte” so that girls can build their meal as they like - for example, spaghetti is served in one bowl, marinara sauce in another, and meatballs in a third. Girls take turns setting, serving, and clearing the table so it is a team effort from start to finish!

On special occasions, meals are served outside the dining hall on the “boardwalk” overlooking the lake. For these fun events, a special buffet is prepared and campers are served their choice in line.

Contrary to what most would think, Birchwood’s “camp food” is raved about by campers and many parents seek out our special recipes to serve at home!
